State jobless rate is 6 percent

Oregon's jobless rate jumped at 6 percent in July, and the state's economy lost jobs for the fourth month out of the last five.

The state Employment Department said this week, the jobless rate has now reached 6 percent, from 5.5 percent the month before and its recent low of 5 percent in early 2007.

There are notable job losses in three sectors: construction, manufacturing, and educational and health services.

The Employment Department confirms: construction is down 10,000 jobs since July 2007.

The state's economy lost 3,600 jobs in July, on a seasonally adjusted basis. Employment stands at 1.7 million and is down by more than 11,000 jobs from its peak in February.

Oregonians honor firefighters dead in helicopter accident

Oregonians are remembering the firefighters killed last week in the crash of a copter in Northern California.

Sunday, in Ashland, parishoners at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church talked about 19-year-old David Steele.

The Reverend Sean Weeks said Steele was involved in a lot of youth programs and outreach ministries. The reverend said he was "just a humble, quiet" guy who loved playing football and rugby.

On Monday morning in Eugene, a memorial service for 25-year-old Scott Charlson is planned.

A pilot and a U.S. Forest Service employee died in the helicopter crash with seven firefighters for the Southern Oregon contractor Grayback Forestry.
